Ignoring a private parking charge rarely makes it disappear. Here's what typically happens, and what to do instead.

1. The escalation path
The charge usually rises after 14 or 28 days, then moves to a debt recovery company adding further 'costs'. Some operators then issue a county court claim.
2. Debt recovery letters
Debt recovery firms have no special powers. They cannot enter your home or take your vehicle, and their added fees are frequently challenged successfully.

3. If a court claim arrives
Never ignore a claim form — respond in time to avoid a default County Court Judgment (CCJ), which can affect your credit for six years.
