CCTV and ANPR Rules
Most private parking charges now come from automatic number plate recognition. Operators must use those systems lawfully and accurately.
By JayFounder, ParkingHero Updated 19 August 2026 6 min readImportant: ANPR data must be accurate, signed for, and handled in line with data protection law.
1. Signage requirements
Sites using cameras must display clear signs telling drivers that ANPR is in use and who operates it, along with the terms of parking.
2. Accuracy and double visits
Cameras often record two short visits as one long stay. If you left and returned the same day, ask for the full photographic record.
Top TipRequest the images with entry and exit timestamps — they frequently undermine the claim.
3. Data protection
You can make a subject access request for the data an operator holds about your vehicle and how it was processed.
