About Smart Parking

Smart Parking Ltd manages car parks at retail parks, gyms, hotels and mixed-use developments, using ANPR camera technology to enforce the terms on site.

It is a member of the International Parking Community (IPC), so independent appeals go to the Independent Appeals Service (IAS) if it rejects an appeal.

Many of its sites expect drivers or the on-site business to register the vehicle at a tablet or reception desk, and charges frequently follow when that step is missed.

How Smart Parking operates

  • ANPR cameras record entry and exit times.
  • On-site businesses register visiting vehicles to exempt them.
  • PCNs are posted to the registered keeper.
  • As an IPC member, rejected appeals are escalated to the Independent Appeals Service (IAS), not POPLA.
  • The venue you visited can often confirm your visit in writing.

Common reasons they issue charges

  • Overstaying the free period at a retail site
  • Not registering your vehicle at a reception tablet
  • Parking as a hotel or gym guest without registering
  • Maximum stay exceeded due to queues or delays

PCN process: what to expect

  1. 1. PCN Issued

A Parking Charge Notice is issued to the registered keeper, usually with a discounted amount for early payment.

  2. 2. Reminder Notices

If unpaid and unappealed, reminder letters follow and the discount is withdrawn.

  3. 3. Debt Recovery

The case may be passed to a debt recovery agent, who often add their own fees.

  4. 4. Legal Action

As a last step a County Court claim can be issued. It can still be defended on the merits.

We Can Help You Challenge a Smart Parking Parking Charge

If you've received a Smart Parking parking charge, you may have grounds to challenge it. We'll help you understand your options, identify relevant evidence and put together your appeal.

Let us handle your appeal

Common issues reported

  • Reception or tablet registration missed by staff
  • Signage that is high up, small or unlit after dark
  • Free periods exceeded because of queues or delays
  • Hotel and gym guests charged despite being customers
  • Camera timestamps that include time spent queueing

Top tips

  • A hotel or gym confirming your visit in writing is often enough to get the charge dropped.
  • Take wide and close-up photos of signage to show what a driver could realistically read.
  • Smart Parking uses the IAS for independent appeals, so follow the IAS process and deadlines rather than POPLA.
